SALT 2013
The SALT New Music Festival and Symposium is a one week event occurring from May 25th to June 2nd, 2013, at Open Space and at the University of Victoria School of Music in Victoria, BC, Canada. The event is created, organized and hosted by the Tsilumos Ensemble, a quartet of musicians comprising Dániel Péter Biró (Guitar), Joanna Hood (Viola), Ajtony Csaba (Piano, Harpsichord and Conductor) and Kristofer Covlin (Saxophones). The festival integrates local and international performers to present performances of groundbreaking new music to Victoria audiences.
The SALT New Music Festival and Symposium will present masterclasses for an international body of students of contemporary music. Bringing experts in the field of contemporary music to Victoria, BC, we hope to create a new framework for the study, research and performance of contemporary and electronic music in this one-week event.
In this year’s SALT New Music Festival and Symposium the Tsilumos Ensemble will premiere three new compositions by Wolf Edwards (Victoria, BC), Steven Takasugi (Cambridge, MA, USA) and Gianluca Ulivelli (Florence, Italy). The commissioning of these new compositions was made possible through a grant from the Ernst von Siemens Foundation for Music.
Guest artists of the SALT New Music Festival and Symposium include recent winners of the Darmstadt Summer Course Kranichstein Prize Ensemble Dal Niente (Chicago, USA), multifaceted electroacoustic virtuosi the Experimentalstudio (Freiburg, Germany), renowned chamber music group the Quasar Saxophone Quartet (Montreal, QC) and Tuba soloist Max Murray (Berlin, Germany/Victoria, BC). Invited composers include Dániel Péter Biró, Wolf Edwards, Suzanne Farrin, Detlef Heusinger, Claus-Steffen Mahnkopf, Steven Kazuo Takasugi and Gianluca Ulivelli.
The 2013 SALT Festival and Symposium offers a series of concerts, lectures, colloquia and masterclasses. Students of contemporary music from Canada and around the world are invited to apply to the program. Selected students will be given the chance to take part in lessons in composition and contemporary music interpretation. Composer applicants will be selected for reading sessions with the Tsilumos Ensemble, Ensemble Dal Niente and the Quasar Saxophone Quartet. Workshops in electronic music will be offered by the team of the Experimentalstudio (Freiburg, Germany) and Kirk McNally (University of Victoria).
All lectures, colloquia, reading sessions and masterclasses at the SALT Festival and Symposium are free of charge and open to the general public. Selected participants will also be able to receive individual lessons free of charge. Travel scholarships are available to talented applicants.
- The 2013 SALT Festival and Symposium has received generous funding from the Art Mentor Foundation Lucerne, the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ernst von Siemens Foundation for Music and Open Space.
