About the program

Inner Time invites the audience into the smallest details of sound: breath, resonance, overtones, silence, and the physical presence of a musician in space.

Horațiu Rădulescu’s music is known for its exploration of the inner life of sound. Rather than treating a note as a fixed object, his work reveals the shifting harmonics and resonances contained within it. Listening becomes an act of concentration, drawing performer and audience into unusually close contact.

A new work by Alex Matterson extends this exploration through bass clarinet and electronics. Acoustic and electronic sounds meet, separate, and reshape one another, creating a dialogue between the immediate presence of the instrument and an expanded sonic environment. Overwhelm explores proximity through a composer–performer partnership that began at SALT 2013. Developed through years of close collaboration, the work blurs the boundaries between composition and performance as the materials from Ray Evanoff’s score are continually reinterpreted, remixed, and reassembled through Hockley’s creative process and live electronics.

This intimate program reflects one of the central ideas of SALT 2026: proximity begins with close listening.

About the performer

A versatile musician for whom “alternative or avant-garde approaches to his instrument are only part of the everyday tool kit” (Georgia Straight), Canadian clarinetist Dr. Liam Hockley is a performer, improviser, and educator whose work bridges classical performance, experimental music, and live electronics.

His debut solo album, Pulse-Tide, was named one of The Wire’s 10 Best Modern Classical Releases of 2024 and praised as “at once vigorous and forensic, grappling with this music’s overall physicality, while also paying microscopic attention to its fine details, its agitated particles and molecular trails.”

Liam has performed across North America, Europe, and Asia, appearing at festivals including the Stockhausen-Konzert und -Kurse, KLANGRAUM, Tongyeong International Music Festival, Vancouver New Music, and Music on Main’s Modulus Festival. An active freelance performer, he regularly appears with major ensembles across British Columbia and has been a member of the Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra since 2020. He was the 2025 Sound Artist in Residence at the West Vancouver Memorial Library and has been an artist in residence with Music on Main, Simon Fraser University’s School for Contemporary Arts, and the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity.

Liam holds a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of British Columbia, where his dissertation explored performer agency in complexist music. His writing has appeared in The Clarinet and FOCI Arts/Words, and his work has been supported by SSHRC, the Canada Council for the Arts, and the BC Arts Council.
