Birdsong: Morning Concert

13 September 2026 8:00 A.M. |Mount Tolmie Park

Musicians of the SALT Experiment

By donation | Advance registration required

At daybreak on Mount Tolmie, audiences are invited to experience a short outdoor concert performed by musicians of the SALT Experiment, surrounded by the sounds of birds, wind, trees, and the waking city. Rather than separating music from nature, the concert allows the two to meet: composed sounds emerge from—and return to—the surrounding environment.

For Catalogue d’oiseaux: BC Miniatures, SALT invited young composers from British Columbia and beyond to create new short works inspired by the song and character of birds found in British Columbia. The composers drew inspiration from species including the Coastal Vesper Sparrow, Northern Spotted Owl, Burrowing Owl, Yellow-breasted Chat, Western Meadowlark, Western Screech-Owl, Long-billed Curlew, Marbled Murrelet, Black Swift, Streaked Horned Lark, and Short-tailed Albatross.

What to expect

This is a brief outdoor dawn concert in a natural park setting. Please dress warmly and for the weather, and wear comfortable, sturdy shoes.

The gathering area is reached through Mount Tolmie Park, which includes natural trails, meadow areas, rocky terrain, and grass. Please stay on designated trails and take care around uneven ground; the Garry Oak ecosystem is sensitive and should not be disturbed.

There will be moments of performed music and moments when we simply listen to the surrounding environment. Birds and other natural sounds are part of the event, so we encourage quiet arrival and attentive listening throughout.

Accessibility: Because this is an outdoor event in a natural landscape, some areas may involve uneven terrain and grass. If you have mobility or accessibility needs, please contact us before the event so we can provide more detailed information about the gathering point and the most accessible route.
